Venus Williams is an American professional tennis player. She is a seven times Grand Slam singles champion, a fourteen times Grand Slam doubles champion and a four times Olympic gold medalist. In 2002, she became the first African American woman world No. 1 in the open era and second ever after Althea Gibson. Williams has advocated for equal pay at the Grand Slam Tournaments and in 2007 she was the first female tennis player to receive the same prize money as the male champion at Wimbledon. She is also a philanthropist and has an interior design company, V Starr and a clothing line called Eleven.
“I wanted to give Venus her flowers. She’s not mentioned enough in the conversation of greatest female athletes. People often forget that Venus was a phenom, a disruptor in a sport that hadn’t seen anything like her before. I wanted to capture her strength, the beauty of her muscles in action that has led to the successful career she’s had on and off the court.”
